Angie & Charlie

Angie

Tell us something about you- a hobby, talent, interest, or something you love to do.

I like to garden, ride my bike, do art, volunteer at the animal shelter, and read.

Tell a funny story about someone in the family.

Back when the Steinmetz kids were little, Dad had a birthday and Mom made an angel food cake for him (not frosted). It was a Sunday, and we all decided to go for a drive, I think to Lone Elk Park. When we came home, Rusty the cat was fast asleep on the cake- but not for long!

What is your favorite family tradition?

Looking at old photos with family and hearing the stories behind them.

If you have a significant other, how did you meet?

Charlie and I met when he came to be an intern at the Denver Art Museum where I was a working. He worked on the Herbert Bayer Archive- something I had also worked on for many years. The following year I joined the same graduate program he was in at the University of Denver, and we became classmates as well. Before long we were dating, and we even have a recording of our first date- a concert we went to on Valentine's Day 2004 (which we have always considered our anniversary date).

When you were a kid, what got you into trouble?

Being too quiet. Was once left at a party and Mom and Dad didn't know I wasn't in the car when they left. Ended up going home with the neighbors when I couldn't find them!

Who is the best friend you have ever had?

In grade school it was Stacey Mertel. We were always together, making up stories and playing outside in the neighborhood.

In high school it was Megan Michalek and Danielle Juarez. We were inseparable, and had a lot of fun together.

As an adult- Charlie. Always there for me, doesn't mind when I go off on my own tangents, understands where I'm coming from. Many others have been good friends too, but he's the best!

What was your first job?

Babysitting, and cleaning houses. I also worked at a friend's snow cone trailer at a pool. My first "real" job was at S&P Oyster company as a busser.

What is the craziest thing you have ever done?

Moving to Denver overnight on a whim, moving to Chicago on a whim too!

What was the worst job you ever had?

Babysitting on my birthday for some misbehaving kids. Orange juice deliberately spilled all over the kitchen floor. One locked the other one in a closet. One tried to start a fire in the back yard. Parents were hours late with no explanation...

Who has had the biggest influence on your life?

Mom. Learned so much from her- really how to do anything! If I didn't know how she showed me I just needed to research how to do it and I'd be able to get it done.

Charlie

Tell a funny story about someone in the family.

On a trip to Utah in 2010(?), we stopped in Denver. Gavin’s shoes or sandals were so stinky we took them outside and put them under our car.

Jerry’s always different but delicious buckwheat pancakes.

If you have a significant other, how did you meet?

We met at the Denver Art Museum working together.

When you were a kid, what got you into trouble?

Being too loud during summer days when mom was sleeping. She worked the night shift as a nurse.

Who is the best friend you have ever had?

Matt Trippel, good friends from kindergarten through high school.

What was your first job?

Paperboy

What is the craziest thing you have ever done?

Lighting fireworks off when folks went out during the day and almost burned the house down. The box of fireworks I had ignited by an errant spark or match. Soot on everything in garage. Black smoke on walls.

What was the worst job you ever had?

I actually have enjoyed all the jobs I have had.
